The House of Representatives passed a bill earlier this month that will require all men aged 18-26 to be automatically registered for conscription into the military. The bill was spearheaded by Representative Chrissy Houlahan, a Democrat from Pennsylvania whose parents came to the United States as Jewish refugees from Lviv, Ukraine in the aftermath of the Second World War. The bill doesn’t officially change government policy, as all male American citizens aged 18-26 were required to register for the draft even before this new bill was passed, and by itself may be unremarkable or merely symbolic, but the circumstances surrounding it may suggest that the US is planning to escalate the situation in Ukraine, the Middle East, and/or Taiwan. Democracy may not be the silliest idea concocted by man but, for anything larger than a small town, it is crackpot. It consists in the idea that a public, on average knowing almost nothing, can choose leaders in popularity contests among provincial lawyers who know little more and are required to know nothing, except how to get elected.

In a democracy, this ignorance is both a protected quality, such as motherhood, and a valued resource. By common consent, the ruled do not look too closely at the mentality of elected rulers, and the rulers speak solemnly of the wisdom of the people, who have none. (more…)

In December of this year, Ilya Somin reviewed Christopher Zurn’s book Splitsville, USA: A Democratic Argument for Breaking up the United States, which was published in May. Somin offers several good-faith critiques of Zurn’s position on national divorce, and even praises Splitsville as “. . . the most significant, fully developed, and intellectually respectable, defense of the claim that breaking up the union is actually a good idea.” Somin’s main concerns are the feasibility and effectiveness of a national divorce. As a staunch proponent of national divorce myself, I would like to reply to Somin’s counter-arguments. (more…)

These special interest groups often lace their campaign contributions with extremely tempting and lucrative private-sector opportunities such as book tours, speaking tours, and privileged consulting positions and careers at the apex of the corporate world, which have allowed many politicians to monetize their political careers and become extraordinarily wealthy. No one sensible could fail to see that our current political situation is unhealthy and unsustainable. Nor could anyone who is being honest fail to admit that our government is undergoing uncontrolled growth, looming larger and larger in this once-free land that it coldly leeches of vitality in order to strengthen itself. It is not my intent here to provide solutions for all aspects of these problems, but rather to focus on one of its roots, and thereby help to make it at least marginally harder for our elites to spit on our laws, degrade our culture, displace our people with hostile foreigners, and saddle our sons and daughters with massive debt in the process.
