Protestants from the British Isles and Irish Catholics have long held animosity towards each other. I’m not going to discuss the Plantation of Ulster, but I assume most readers already know that anti-Irish discrimination was once a very real phenomenon. And it still is, if you consider that various groups are currently trying to replace the Irish people in their own homelands with Third World migrants. When this is discussed in public debate, however, the Irish people suddenly don’t actually exist in the establishment’s eyes. For them, Ireland is a “nation of immigrants” or some other such nonsense. The reality of the Irish people, such as that of other European ethnic groups, is never acknowledged — unless acknowledging their existence serves an ulterior motive. (more…)

What is it like to be part of a family as large as a nation? If that family is the city of Belfast and that nation is the Irish, then Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast gives us quite the clue. Effectively, this film is a love letter to the Irish people — and everything in it suggests that “the Irish” refers only to those who share a common ethnicity. Yes, there are a smattering of Asians in the film — which may be realistic, given that the story takes place in 1969 — but these so-called “people of color” are not employed against history as props but as fittingly minor aspects of the Belfast backdrop. The heterogeneity of America’s European population has always posed a challenge to its national identity. Only late in the nineteenth century was this identity extended to European immigrants assimilated in its Anglo-Protestant values and, in the twentieth century, to Catholics, whose Church (the “Whore of Babylon”) had learned to accommodate the Protestant contours of American life (or what John Murray Cuddihy called its “civil religion”). From this ethnogenesis, the original Anglo-Protestant identity of the American people gradually evolved into a more inclusive European Christian identity, though one closely tied to its Anglo-Protestant antecedents.
