The world’s eyes were on Western Europe in Sunday’s European Union elections, where dramatic results were expected in France and Germany. Angelo Plume has already offered an account of these results. But unusual things have been happening in Hungary as well, which has been a focal point of hope for populism ever since Prime Minister Viktor Orbán began his current tenure in 2010.

Hungary wields little power in comparison to the “great nations” of Western Europe. Hungary is only allotted 21 seats out of 720 in the European Parliament, compared to Germany’s 96 and France’s 81. (more…)

Cyan asked me to speak on this topic, and before I begin, I just want to clarify something, because when it comes to these matters I’m overly pedantic. But historically speaking, ethnonationalism and religion don’t go together. This is because the nation-state itself, which was born out of either the French Revolution or the Second English Civil War, depending on who you ask, has always been secular and opposed to any mixing of politics and religion. Jobbik, svého času označovaný za nejradikálnější parlamentní stranu v Evropě, se v průběhu několika málo let proměnil v centristické a Evropské unii nakloněné uskupení, čímž zcela opustil svou dřívější radikální rétoriku, namířenou proti EU, NATO, hnutí LGBT nebo cikánské zločinnosti. Dnes se strana pokouší vytvořit spojenectví s liberální a progresivní levicí s cílem svrhnout vládu premiéra Viktora Orbána a jeho strany Fidesz. Hungary in 2018 lies under a pall of darkness. Its citizens, kept in thrall by being fed a steady diet of fear of imaginary threats, unbridled racism, and cynical hatemongering through the government’s relentless propaganda, are cowed and starving, but dare not speak out, as the government brutally cracks down on the slightest dissent. Zakázanie konferencie NPI (Národný politický inštitút) na tému „Budúcnosť Európy“ vládou prezidenta Viktora Orbána bolo bezprecedentnou udalosťou v histórii post-komunistického Maďarska. Ide o zlom pre identitárne hnutia a možno i pre samotný kontinent, keďže jeho vládcovia dali jasne najavo, že v Európe nedovolia obhajobu európskych záujmov.
