Looking forward to listening to this. Hunter Thompson is WAY overdue for a take down. Most overrated “rebel” in American history.
I used to be a huge HST fan. He’s aged as poorly as a hero as he did as a man.
He had huge talent. But like so many key 60s icons, his drug-and-alcohol-fueled hedonism unmoored from any higher philosophy probably did more harm than good, not just to himself but to the millions who were deeply influenced by him.
I actually loved Hells Angels, thought it was a fantastic book. I can’t say I enjoyed anything else I read of his, including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The stuff he wrote during the Clinton presidency was atrocious. Anyway, I think now he is mostly (not entirely but mostly) revered for his hedonism and not for his writing talent. Ironically, as far left as he was, he’d stick out like a sore thumb in today’s soft, neoliberal culture.
It’d be curious to see how he would have written about the Trump presidency and 2016 election. I think HST is a lot more nuanced than to merely assume he would be anti-Trump.
I enjoyed his writing. The art of it was trying to figure out whether or not he was telling the truth. Just like with Infowars or any news organization. What gives the MSM the monopoly on truth? They’ve gotten it wrong so many times, especially in the past couple years. So yeah, HST saying Ed Muskie was out of his mind on ibogaine based on some truths and half truths. According to this it was to test the gullibility of the press: http://willrabbe.com/microblog/2011/4/11/edmund-muskies-drug-addiction-according-to-hunter-thompson.html
