Plan B: Co-opting & Subverting Nationalism

1,038 words

[1]In the last week, we have received 26 donations totaling $4,234.33 for which we are enormously grateful. Our goal this year is to raise $70,000. So far, we have received 104 donations totaling $16,547.27. So we are almost one quarter of the way there. See below for new incentives to give.

Some readers have asked what’s my next project now that The White Nationalist Manifesto is finished and going to press. Frankly, I was wondering that myself, until the answer was provided by a piece in the New York Times, “How Liberals Can Reclaim Nationalism [2]” by one (((Yascha Mounk))), to which a friend recently drew my attention. Mounk’s essay, as well as his book, ludicrously entitled The People vs. Democracy: Why Our Freedom is in Danger and How to Save It, is part of an emerging strategy that I call Plan B.

Plan A is basically pedal to the metal globalization and far-Left anti-white identity politics, which hopes to outright destroy its nationalist opponents. Basically, the pussy-hat wearing, Clinton Kool-Aid drinking Twitter and Tumblr “Resistance.”

Plan B strikes a more moderate, centrist posture and seeks to embrace and subvert the populist-nationalist forces that are sweeping the world by channeling them into liberal, multicultural forms of manufactured civic nationalism. In Mounk’s words:

Nationalism is like a half-wild beast. As long as it remains under our control, it can be of tremendous use. But if we abandon it, others are sure to step in, prodding and baiting the beast to bring out its most ferocious side. For all the well-founded misgivings about it, we have little choice but to domesticate it as best we can.

Plan B is being pushed by such thinkers as Mounk, a well as Mark Lilla, author of The Once and Future Liberal: After Identity Politics; William Galston, author of Anti-Pluralism: The Threat to Liberal Democracy and How to Stop It; and Francis Fukuyama, in his forthcoming book Identity: The Demand for Dignity and the Politics of Resentment.

Lilla, Galston, and Fukuyama are basically Left-wing Straussians. I am less sure about Mounk’s intellectual pedigree, but Fukuyama gives a glowing recommendation to Mounk’s book. Of course, Left and Right do not fundamentally matter to these writers. They slide up and down the political spectrum at will. What never changes, however, is their commitment to globalization, multiculturalism, and minority rule.

All of these writers are determined to defend “liberal democracy” against  populism and nationalism. How, exactly, is rule by the people (populism) a threat to democracy rather than a definition of it? Basically, for all of these thinkers, the “liberal” in “liberal democracy” means minority rule. Which for Straussians and their ilk boils down to securing and empowering diaspora Jewry by breaking down exclusionary forms of ethnic nationalism.

My next project is the intellectual demolition of Plan B. Stay tuned.

Like most dissident journals of ideas, Counter-Currents depends upon donations to survive. If you want Counter-Currents to thrive, make a donation today. In particular, consider becoming a patron of The White Nationalist Manifesto, to be published on September 15th:

Finally, if all of these options are too rich for you, you can simply pre-order The White Nationalist Manifesto in paperback or a regular, non-limited hardcover edition. Watch for a pre-order page in the near future.

To help take our fundraiser to the next level, Charles Krafft has donated one of his Ayn Rand piggy banks to be auctioned off. Right now, only one of these piggy banks is in any collection in the world. (That would be mine.) If you want this piggy bank to be yours, the starting bid is $650 (plus the actual cost of postage anywhere in the world). To bid, simply email me at [email protected] [3]. I will post bid amounts here, so you can keep track, and I will keep all bidders informed by email. Bidding will close on Sunday, August 26th at 5 pm Eastern Standard time.

So far, we have received two bids, and the winning bid stands at $675.
