Years ago I had a friend who was a big Christian conservative. He made an interesting observation: that the reason conservatives concentrated so much on economic issues (free trade, low taxes, etc.) is that Marxism was their underlying ideology. Granted, it was a vulgar, economic Marxism, but this was why conservatives could not engage on the cultural front. They reduced everything down to the material dimension. So race, nation, religion, any kind of metaphysic was not on the conservative agenda.
Of course, it may be extreme to claim that materialism boils down to Marxism, but even so, we have seen the failure of conservatism to conserve anything.
