An Armenian Question

Greg Johnson

218 words

sayat-novaEthnically Armenian and part-Armenian individuals have been readers and supporters of Counter-Currents from the start. But in the last two months, I have noticed an increase in traffic from Armenia itself, as well as in increase in book purchases and donations from people with Armenian names in the United States and Europe.

As a student of history and culture, I know that Armenians are an ancient, civilized, and accomplished people. But since Armenia is a Middle Eastern rather than a European nation, I have asked a number of these individuals about what drew them here, and how they think they fit with European identity politics. They give two basic answers.

  • First, they think of themselves as a more-or-less assimilated white ethnic group from a country that has been culturally and religiously connected to Hellenic, Roman, and Christian European civilization since antiquity.
  • Second, they feel that Armenians and Europeans in general share a common enemy in organized Jewry, and these feelings have spiked with the recent commemoration of the Armenian genocide, whose recognition is opposed by the organized Jewish community.

Of course, these views of Counter-Currents readers might not be typical of the larger community. I would like to invite other ethnically Armenian readers to share their perspectives with me by writing to [email protected].

Frankly, I’m tired of this whole “are X,Y, or Z really white.” All it does is divide an weaken our cause. Armenians were part of greater Hellenic and Indo-European civilization. They have maintained that heritage. I would much rather accept Armenians as my brothers in arms rather than degenerate “PURE NORDIC” Swedes. Indeed, I’d rather accept the proud Persians of Iran as the heirs of a true Aryan culture, rather than decadent Westerners who have abandoned every connection with their ancestors but their skin tone.

I suppose you are not in favor of racial classification and evolutionary theory, are you? The fact of the matter is race is related to phylogeny and geography, and populations of the Near East can easily be identified from native Europeans. If Nordics (or Nordish, if we prefer McCulloch’s classification) and Armenians mated at random, the traits of both populations would gradually diminish and the offspring would not resemble either population. I presume both Armenians and northern Europeans would avoid this scenario at all costs.

The rest of your post is really either/or reasoning and does not address the topic at hand. This is not about which race or culture is superior; the questions is, can any reasonable distinction be made between Armenians and Europeans?

The purpose of this post was not to invite WNs to play the Who is white?/Whiter than thou game, but to poll some Armenian readers, and some have contacted me offline, for which I thank them. I probably should not have opened comments on this tread at all, and I am shutting them down now.

I first became aware of Armenian interest in our general area when I frequented related internet fora. The Armenians always came in at once. Where there once was none, there was suddenly many. They seemed quite eager to assert their Europeandom. Plenty of history lessons were given. Possibly dubious etymologies of the word Armenia given. (Yes, that’s Ar-menia. Ar- as in Aryan.) They were the first nation to officially adopt Christianity. Their language is Indo-European.

I suppose they’re a fuzzy borderline case with some who would quite easily fit in and others who, based on phenotype alone, would seem more suited to the Middle East. I find it hard to accept Kim Kardashian as White, for example.

I find Christian Armenians together with Christian Lebanese entirely acceptable as ethnic minorities is a White country, more so than Muslim Bosnians or Muslim Albanians. The practice of Judaism or Islam should be a reason for exclusion.

FWIW, I’ve been told that Armenians in California prisons, based on long-standing agreement, go with the Mexicans rather than with whites.

This is interesting. They are a liminal group, so they can claim to be white or non-white as it suits their interests.

Let’s make it simple shall; don’t push away friends and/or willing allies, be kind to those who want to support you and don’t think black and white (if we accept their friendship, it means we have to sleep with them!!!!). Armenia is a good extra-European ally to have. They don’t have to be genetically identical to you in order to maintain a “special relationship” and it is good to have an ally rather than gain yet another enemy while you are in a losing position to begin with. And why not have a non-Muslim land be strong in that area?

I’ve read a few books and articles about the history of armenia. They’re indoeuropean by blood and culture. Even their national symbol is a swastika. Arevakhach, a solar warrior-god war cross.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenian_eternity_sign (also check out the armenian version of the article)

I would recommend some books on the armenian history but they’re in spanish (original version)

I view Armenians as part of the West’s extended family. Primarily, we share a common bond in Christianity. There is also a heroic element to Armenian history where they fought many times to maintain their unique identity, especially from being absorbed by surrounding powers like the Turks and Persians. This is something that should resonate heavily with European men.

I look at Armenians not as Europeans, but as friendly Near Eastern cousins like Georgians. Culturally, they are not entirely European, but they look toward Europe, have assimilated European culture since Antiquity, and have contributed to European culture. Being Christian or post-Christian, they are not fundamentally hostile to Christian or post-Christian Europeans, as are genetically and culturally similar Muslims and Jews. I lived around Armenians in San Francisco, and I live around them in my present location, and although they are clannish, believe in haggling, and gravitate toward similar economic niches as Jews, they don’t lay awake at night thinking of ways to destroy Western civilization. Racially, they are a liminal/Near Eastern Caucasian group, which means they can identify as white or non-white if they want. Those who identify with our cause, and are idealistic enough to put up with the bullshit they get, are welcome allies.
