Gwynneth Jones Sings Wagner’s “Dich teure Halle”

I apologize for the poor video quality, but this is the best performance on YouTube and has the benefit of English subtitles. This is from the DVD of the 1978 Bayreuth production of Tannhäuser, conducted by Sir Colin Davis.

It pains me to think that “modernity” or “post-modernity” or whatever goes under that title would replace the classical culture.
It pains me to think that “rap” music or whatever is promoted now-days would
replace the classical music.
It pains me to think that vulgarity, obnoxiousness, ugliness would replace refined
emotions, nobility and beauty.
Is this the game theory opera?
Perfect choice for Wagner! And such a beautiful, elegant woman too, even in old age.
This is a much better performance on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwHnfay7hrc
Wow I just read the review of Tannhauser that you linked to at amazon and this woman sang both roles of Venus and Elizabeth. That is impressive. Also very interesting in a symbolic sense.
